Review Archives: Nightwish - "Once"

Were this band American, people would be screaming, "Grammy!" From end to end this is the best cd I've heard yet from the Metal crowd. The CD opens up with a heavily gothic / Operatic number called "Dark Chest Of Wonders" that will astound you the moment you hear it. Track two, "Wish I Had an Angel" continues this trend with a more intense "Rob Zombie Meets Modern Day Opera" feel. This thing could have been in Van Helsing....

Other tracks of note are "Ghost Love Score", "Kuolema Tekke Taiteilijan", and "Nemo" which is the single that reached the top of UK Charts.

Nightwish is a Powermetal act lead by a Soprano front woman who's talent can be described as unmatched in this industry. Following the band is a full Orchestra produced almost identically to the one on Metallica's "S & M" CD.

Fans of harsher and edgier sounds where there is more screaming than singing will whine, no doubt, that Tarja Turunen sucks because she can actually sing and not scream. If you think Fred Durst is a genius, you should probably look elsewhere...

If you like great music, buy this CD... If you want to try something new, again, buy this CD. In short, a musically open mind is required for an epic of this caliber. This is not your 3 chord wonder band tuned to drop d for noise factor. This is beautifully orchestrated music, a true symphony of the soul.
